HELP! Some frequently asked questions about frequent occurrences...
Rules for Brass Players (and their tool-happy parent...) This is a must-read for anyone with a pair of Vice-Grips.
Q: How do I hold my instrument?
A: Check out the first couple pages of your "Sound Innovations" book, or the "Visual Guide to Holding your Instrument" link. (More instruments are coming!)
Q: Why won't my instrument case won't close easily?
A: DO NOT FORCE IT! Your instrument is not properly in the case. Double check that it's in correctly, especially for woodwinds.
Q: Why doesn't my instrument work after I've forced the case shut? What do I do?
A: You've bent something. You should: 1) hope your parents have a maintenance/repair agreement, 2) tell them "you have NO IDEA what happened", and 3) bring it to Mr. Ohlsen so he can get it sent in and then tell your parents what happened.
Q: My mouthpiece is stuck (brass instruments). What do I do?
A: First I'll start with what you DON'T do. Don't let a parent anywhere near it with ANY sort of tool.
See: Rules for Brass Players (and their fathers). Bring it to Mr. Ohlsen so he can use his mouthpiece puller.
Q: I can't get any sound out of my trumpet/baritone/tuba, (usually trumpet). What do I do?
A: One of two things. Your pet gerbil is stuck inside the instrument or you have put the valves in the wrong way. (You didn't let your parents or siblings try to "help", did you?) First, only take ONE valve out at a time. Most have a number on them. The valve closest to where you put the mouthpiece is #1. The trumpet valves usually have a plastic tab that fits into a notch in the valve case. The larger of the two goes on the side with the larger tubing.
Q: I can't get my clarinet together or apart. What do I do?
A: This is common for new clarinets. Use your cork grease and put the pieces on CAREFULLY as far as you can. The corks will compress and it will get easier. A parent can help you as long as they promise NOT TO USE TOOLS.
