District 66 Instrumental Ensembles Overview
Dear Parents,
Welcome to the District 66 Band Program and thank you for investing in your child’s future. You are providing the opportunity for discipline, self-expression, creativity, and achievement.
The Band Program
The Concert Bands in District 66 are part of a curricular music program. All students 4-8th grade recieve one 30-minute lesson per week, using a schedule that rotates throughout the day. All students
Prairieview Beginning Band - Mr. Tedeschi
The Beginning Band consists primarily of 4th grade students in their first year of instruction. Recruitment orientation begins in the spring of the 3rd grade and continues in the fall. Beginning Band parent orientation is in early September. Instrument tryouts happen during the music classes, the instrument "petting zoo" times, and through one on one conferences.
Beginning Band lessons start in early October on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. After approximately six weeks, they start rehearsing together as a group. The band is split into two groups that rehearse before school from 7:20-7:55 am on Mondays and Fridays. Beginning Band students perform a demo concert with the LV Wind Ensemble in February and a stand-alone concert, their debut performance in May.
If a student in 5th grade who did not join band in 4th grade desires to be in band, that student must start with the Beginning Band students and will be placed in the Beginning Band for the school year. Private lessons are highly encouraged to help move these students ahead, as they will make a grade jump into the jr. high.
A student moving into the district with experience in band will perform an audition in order to determine proper placement in the band program.
Prairieview Cadet Band - Mr. Ohlsen
The Concert Band consists of primarily 5th graders in their second year of instruction. Lesson days are on Tuesday and Thursday. Cadet Band has full band rehearsals on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, before school, from 7:20-7:55 am.
The Cadet Band members typically perform in two school concerts, winter and spring, at the District 66 Winter Invitational in December, and at the Band-O-Rama festival in the spring. They will also be required to prepare and perform a solo for the District 66 Solo Festival in February. Concert attire is their green music polo, (supplied), along with black dress pants, black shoes with no other coloring, and black crew-length socks.
Lakeview Concert Band - Mr. Ohlsen/Mr. Tedeschi
The Concert Band consists primarily of 6th grade students, along with advanced 5th graders and older students working on upper level skills and/or secondary instruments. Concert Band students rehearse as a full group every day, during 7th period.
This group performs at three school concerts, fall, winter, and spring, at the District 66 Winter Invitational, at the Band-O-Rama festival in the early spring, and at a late spring contest as our schedule allows. They will also be required to prepare and perform a solo for the District 66 Solo Festival in February.
Concert attire is their black music polo, (supplied), along with black dress pants, black shoes with no other coloring, and black crew-length socks.
Lakeview Symphonic Wind Ensemble - Mr. Ohlsen/Mr. Tedeschi
The Symphonic Winds are the combined 7th and 8th grade students. This group rehearses every day during 8th period.
The Symphonic Winds perform at three school concerts, fall, winter, and spring, at the Prairieview recruitment concert, at the Southeast DuPage Band Festival in March, and at a contest performance festival in the spring. This group may also perform at one of the following festivals, as audition and schedule allows: Prairie State Band Festival, ISU Invitational, Illinois SuperState, ILMEA Festival and Clinic, the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic. They will also be required to prepare and perform a solo for the District 66 Solo Festival in February. Members of this group also performs in the Marching Spartan Band, (see below).
Concert attire is:
Males: black tux pants, black cummerbund, black bow tie, white tux shirt with no studs, (supplied by LV), black crew-length socks and black shoes with no other colors.
Females: A choice between the tux (as mentioned above), or a black velvet top, full-length black skirt, black shoes with no other colors. (Flats preferred.)
When the overall enrollment numbers allow, the bands will split into two separate groups:

This group performs at three school concerts, fall, winter, and spring, at the Prairieview recruitment concert, at the Southeast DuPage Band Festival in March, and at a contest performance festival in the spring. This group may also perform at one of the following festivals, as audition and schedule allows: Prairie State Band Festival, ISU Invitational, Illinois SuperState, ILMEA Festival and Clinic, the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic. Lakeview Marching Spartans -Mr. Ohlsen/Mr. Tedeschi
All 7th and 8th grade band students are a part of the Marching Spartans. Their performances normally include the Von Steuben Day parade, Downers Grove South Homecoming, Lakeview Homecoming and a competitive march during the spring as the schedule allows. This group will also march at DGS football games, Music Bowl, and area parades as they come up.
Marching attire is the black marching jacket, black band T-shirt, hat, black tux pants, (supplied by LV), black crew-length socks and ALL black shoes.
Lakeview Jazz Ensemble
The Jazz Ensemble is an extra-curricular, competitive performing group of eligible 7th- 8th grade students enrolled in the band program. This ensemble performs at the fall, winter, and spring concerts, the Downers South Jazz Café, and competes at a spring festival. This group will also perform for other community or school functions as they come up. Concert attire is black tux pants, cummerbund, bow tie, (supplied by LV), white tux shirt (no studs), black crew-length socks and black shoes with no other colors.
Lakeview Jazz LAB Band The Jazz LAB Band is an extra-curricular, entry level jazz group open to all eligible 5th-8th grade students enrolled in band. This ensemble serves two main purposes: 1) To allow more students access to jazz music, especially those who play non-traditional jazz band instruments, and 2) To start young rhythm section players on bass, drumset and jazz piano. This group performs at the winter and spring concerts. No audition is required for this group.
